Introduction 1

This is a bible study showing how God ordained marriage in the beginning, and also some attributes of God himself. This will not only give us a basis for understanding God's ideal for marriage today, but will also enable us to establish certain facts which can be used to test the truth of our future interpretation. Scripture is not out of harmony with itself, but shows a great deal of spiritual consistency; the whole of it being inspired by Almighty God (2 TIMOTHY 3:16).

#1.1 GOD ORDAINED MARRIAGE

GENESIS 2:7,18-25
7 And Yahweh God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
18 And Yahweh God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.
19 And out of the ground Yahweh God formed every beast of the field, and every bird of the air; and he brought them to Adam to see what he would call them: and whatever Adam called every living creature, that was the name of it.
20 And Adam gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
21 And Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place:
22 And the rib, which Yahweh God had taken from man, he made a woman, and brought her to the man.
23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cling to his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

MATTHEW 19:3-6
3 The Pharisees also came to him, tempting him, and saying to him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
4 And he answered and said to them, Have you not read, that he who made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cling to his wife: and they two shall be one flesh?
6 Therefore they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, do not let man separate.

MARK 10:6-9
6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
7 For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and cling to his wife;
8 And they two shall be one flesh: so then they are no more two, but one flesh.
9 What therefore God has joined together, do not let man separate.

Note: At the beginning of creation God made one man and one woman to be together as man and wife. They were to come together as one flesh (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:6-7; Mark 10:8), speaking of a sexual union, which was capable of reproducing itself in the form of children. Anything outside of this original plan for man is outside of God's perfect will. Therefore, as God only created one wife for Adam, any man with more than one wife is out of God's will, and this is still true for the New Testament:

(1 Timothy 3:2) "An overseer then must be blameless, the husband of one wife."
(1 Timothy 3:12) "Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife."
(Titus 1:5-6) "Ordain elders in every city ...
If any be blameless, the husband of one wife."

As God only created one husband for Eve, any woman with more than one husband is also out of God's will, and this is also indicated in the New Testament:

(1 Timothy 5:9) "Do not let a widow be taken into the number under sixty years old, having been the wife of one man."

God did not institute homosexuality here. It came as a later perversion, which is revealed by scripture to be against the will of God (Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Deuteronomy 22:5), and cannot fulfill God's command to "be fruitful and multiply" (Genesis 1:28).
In the same way, lesbianism was not instituted here by God, but is also against his will (Deuteronomy 22:5; Romans 1:26), and cannot fulfill God's command to "be fruitful and multiply" either. If the whole human race were homosexual and lesbian, it would destroy itself completely within one generation, making it obvious that the Devil is behind these perverted relationships (John 10:10).

#1.2 LAWFUL MARRIAGE IS NOT SIN

1 CORINTHIANS 7:27-28 (Paul)
27 Are you bound to a wife? do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? do not seek a wife.
28 But and if you marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she has not sinned. Nevertheless such as have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you.

1 CORINTHIANS 7:36 (Paul)
36 But if any man think that he behaves himself improperly towards his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, does not sin: let them marry.

1 TIMOTHY 4:1-3 (Paul)
1 Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of demons;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God has created to be received with thanksgiving of those who believe and know the truth.

Note: The fact that marriage is not a sin may seem obvious to most people, and the above scriptures certainly make that clear. However, there have always been religious people, who for some reason have forbidden marriage, and the apostle Paul indicated that this is a "doctrine of demons" (1 Timothy 4:1-3). There is nothing wrong with being unmarried either, for both Jesus and the apostle Paul were unmarried.
