Introduction

There are some people who teach that there are no people on the earth during the Millennium reign of Christ for one thousand years after Jesus' second coming, but that the bottomless pit refers to the earth and Satan will be the only one there.

(Revelation 20:1-3) And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the abyss (bottomless pit) and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, who is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the abyss, and shut him up, and sealed over him, that he should deceive the nations no more, until the thousand years were fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little time.

The purpose of putting Satan in the abyss was so that he could not deceive the nations any more until he was let out. So where are the nations that he would deceive if not on the earth? Satan and his angels are cast out of heaven onto the earth (Revelation 12:9) and are here with people during the last years before Jesus returns deceiving them. So if he is on the earth and then he is cast into the abyss, the earth cannot be the abyss.
The vast majority of Christians know that this teaching is not true, but for those who don't this bible study gives sound scriptural proof that there are people on the earth outside of the New Jerusalem during the Millennium reign of Christ and not Satan.

#1. SEED TIME AND HARVEST WILL NOT CEASE DURING THE MILLENNIUM

GENESIS 8:22 (God)
22 While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

Note: This was a prophecy and a promise that God gave to Noah after the flood when he and his family were the only survivors. If seed time and harvest shall not cease while the earth remains, then we have to ask the question, 'Who will be sowing the seed and doing the harvesting if only Satan is on the earth during the Millennium?' He won't be doing it! The obvious answer is that there will be people here to do it.

#2. PEOPLE ON EARTH AFTER ARMAGEDDON

ZECHARIAH 14:16-19
16 And it shall come to pass, that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, Yahweh of Hosts, and to keep the feast of booths.
17 And it shall be, that whoever will not come up of all the families of the earth to Jerusalem to worship the King, Yahweh of Hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.
18 And if the family of Egypt does not go up, and does not come, who have no rain: there shall be the plague, with which Yahweh will strike the heathen who come not up to keep the feast of booths.
19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that do not come up to keep the feast of booths.

Note: Zechariah 14 is about the second coming of Jesus Christ and the destruction of all the armies who fight against Jerusalem at that time, but in the above scripture it shows that there are still people left on the earth who continue to live on into the Millennium. The phrases 'everyone who is left of all the nations' (v16), 'all families of the earth' (v17), 'the family of Egypt' (v18) and 'the punishment of all nations' (v19) prove that this is so. These are not resurrected dead people as the unsaved dead do not rise until after the Millennium (Revelation 20:5). They will also be expected 'to keep the feast of booths' (v16) which shows that the law has not been done away with by Jesus on the cross.

#3. PEACE ON EARTH DURING THE MILLENNIUM

ISAIAH 2:1-4
1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
2 And it shall come to pass at the end of the days, that the mountain of the house of Yahweh shall be established at the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it.
3 And many people shall go and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of Yahweh, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem. 4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, nor shall they learn war any more.

Note: It is generally accepted that this prophecy is about the Millennium reign of Jesus Christ on earth, and the obvious proof is the statement, 'They shall not learn war any more' (v4). The timing is 'the end of the days' (v2) but obviously this cannot be before Armageddon when Jesus returns to set up his Millennium kingdom (Zechariah 14) as that will be the last war of this age. The reason that there will be no war is because Satan will be in the abyss and unable to deceive them into doing it. After the Millennium, when he is let out of the abyss war will start again (Revelation 20:7-8).

#4. WICKED PEOPLE OUTSIDE JERUSALEM DURING THE MILLENNIUM

REVELATION 22:2
2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, a tree of life, producing twelve fruits, yielding her fruit each month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

REVELATION 22:14-15
14 Blessed are those who do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For outside are dogs, and sorcerers, and fornicators, and murderers, and idolaters, and whoever loves and makes a lie.

Note: These are just two more scriptures that show that there are people outside of the New Jerusalem during the Millennium reign of Jesus Christ. The leaves of the tree of life inside the city are for 'the healing of the nations'. These nations must be the ones outside the city as there will be no sickness inside it (Revelation 21:4), for the people there will have incorruptible bodies (1 Corinthians 15:53-54). Revelation 22:15 is a plain undeniable statement that there are people outside the city.

#5. THE SAINTS WILL BE REIGNING ON THE EARTH

REVELATION 5:10
10 And have made us to our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

REVELATION 20:4, 6
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them: and I saw the souls of those who were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and who had not worshipped the beast, nor his image, nor had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ for the thousand years.
6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection: on such the second death has no authority, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Note: One of the rewards for being faithful to Jesus and overcoming the mark of the beast, if we live in that time, is that we will reign on the earth with Jesus for the one thousand years of his Millennieum reign. What will we reign over - a desolate world with only the Devil on it? No dear reader, the earth is going to be highly populated (Isaiah 2:3, Zechariah 14:16, Revelation 20:8-9, 22:15) and the saints will have plenty of people to reign over.

#6. WAR AT THE END OF THE MILLENNIUM

REVELATION 20:7-9
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations that are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and encircled the camp of the saints, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

Note: If Satan is loosed out of his prison (the abyss) and then goes to deceive the nations on the earth it proves that the earth is not the abyss. But people, 'the number of whom is as the sand of the sea' (v8), are here on the earth, figuratively 'the four quarters of the earth' (v8), after Satan is released and he goes out to deceive them. This again proves that many people are on the earth during the Millennium reign of Christ.

#7. CONCLUSION ON THE MILLENNIUM REIGN

There are plenty of scriptures here that plainly prove that people are on the earth during the Millennium reign of Jesus Christ. They will live outside of the New Jerusalem (Revelation 22:15) and will not be allowed to enter into it (Revelation 21:27). There are also other scriptures which people use concerning the Millennium (Isaiah 65:20, 66:23-24, Jeremiah 33:15-16). The people outside the New Jerusalem will be put under the law (Isaiah 2:3; Zechariah 14:16), and this will point them to Jesus so that they can be saved (Galatians 3:24).
