Hebrew Names of God
One of the most important areas of Hebrew word study is the names of God. Each name reveals an aspect of God's character and nature. Understanding these names deepens our relationship with and knowledge of God.
The LORD, the self-existent one
The most sacred name of God in the Hebrew scriptures, often rendered LORD in English translations. It comes from the verb 'to be' and means the self-existent, eternal one. This is the personal name of God revealed to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14).
God, mighty one
The most common Hebrew word for God, used over 2,500 times in the Old Testament. It is a plural form used with singular verbs when referring to the one true God, indicating the fullness and majesty of God's being.
God Almighty, God of the mountains
El Shaddai is the name by which God revealed himself to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Exodus 6:3). It speaks of God's all-sufficient power and his ability to fulfil every promise he has made.
Lord, master, owner
Adonai means Lord or Master. It is used as a title of respect and authority. Jewish readers traditionally substitute Adonai when reading the divine name YHWH aloud.
The LORD will provide
The name given by Abraham to the place where God provided a ram in place of Isaac (Genesis 22:14). It declares that God sees our need and provides for it.
The LORD who heals
God revealed himself as the healer of his people in Exodus 15:26. This name assures us that God is able and willing to heal both physical and spiritual sickness.
Peace, wholeness, completeness
Shalom is one of the richest words in the Hebrew language. It means far more than the absence of conflict — it encompasses wholeness, completeness, prosperity, and well-being in every area of life.
Truth, faithfulness, reliability
Emet is the Hebrew word for truth. It carries the sense of firmness, reliability, and faithfulness. God's word is truth (Psalm 119:160), and God himself is the God of truth.
Lovingkindness, steadfast love, mercy
Chesed is one of the most important theological words in the Old Testament. It describes God's covenant love — his steadfast, loyal, merciful love toward his people. It is often translated 'lovingkindness' or 'mercy' in English.
Repentance, return, turning back
Teshuvah means a turning back or returning to God. It is the Hebrew concept of repentance — not merely feeling sorry for sin, but actively turning away from it and returning to God with the whole heart.
