The Gift of the Holy Spirit

On the Day of Pentecost, something extraordinary happened. The disciples were gathered together in one place when suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind. They were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:1-4).

This was the fulfilment of Jesus' promise: 'Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you' (Acts 1:8). The gift of the Holy Spirit is not reserved for a select few — it is promised to all who repent and are baptised in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38-39).

The initial evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance. This is the consistent pattern throughout the book of Acts (Acts 2:4, Acts 10:44-46, Acts 19:6). Speaking in tongues is not the end of the experience — it is the beginning of a life lived in the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is our comforter, teacher, and guide. Jesus said, 'The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things' (John 14:26). The Spirit leads us into all truth and empowers us to live holy lives.

The fruit of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (Galatians 5:22-23) — is the evidence of a Spirit-filled life. As we yield to the Holy Spirit, these qualities are produced in us and we become more like Christ.
