One of the false teachings of the pre-tribulation rapture teachers is that no prophesied event stands between us now and the rapture. So what is the significance of 'the heavens shall pass away'? Simply this, if we can show from scripture that the heavens shall pass away before the rapture, then we have proven the pre-tribulation rapture argument false. This bible study gives scriptural proof that the heavens shall pass away before the rapture.
12 So man lies down, and does not rise: until the heavens are no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
1 THESSALONIANS 4:15-17 (Paul)
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain to the coming of the Lord shall not go before those who are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.
17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: so shall we ever be with the Lord.
2 PETER 3:7-12
7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved for fire for the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering towards us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are in it shall be burned up.
11 Seeing that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons aught you to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting to the coming of the day of God, in which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
Note: Paul made it clear that the resurrection of the dead in Christ, which is known as "the first resurrection." (Revelation 20:5-6), takes place at the same time as the rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17). Job said that this would not be, "until the heavens are no more." (Job 14:12), and the apostle Peter confirmed this by indicating that "the heavens shall pass away" on "the day of the Lord" (2 Peter 3:10), which is the same day that Jesus comes for his church. This will be a local thing at Jerusalem when Jesus returns to destroy the wicked armies of the antichrist at the battle of Armageddon.
(Zechariah 14:12) And this shall be the plague with which Yahweh will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem;
Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
(Malachi 4:1) For, behold, the day comes, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yes, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that comes shall burn them up, says Yahweh of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
