Introduction 2.1

This is a thorough Greek word study about the Greek word νόμος, 'nomos' meaning 'Law', Strong's 3551, in the New Testament. It gives every verse where the word 'nomos' appears. To obtain a true understanding of this word these scriptures need to be meditated on and notes made of their meaning in different contexts. This requires putting scriptures together where they seem to have a similar meaning, and then meditating even more. The truth will be revealed by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to guide us into all truth (John 16:13). Wherever this word nomos appears in the Greek, the translation of it is highlighted with yellow. In Greek the suffixes and some prepositions are not added to the basic word to enhance the meaning, except for case endings, so the associated suffix or preposition has not been included in highlighted text. The exception is that we have included the definite article in the highlighted text when it has occurred, as this may be significant. Every blessing be to those who seek the truth of God's word.

#2.1 Scriptures for νόμος 'nomos' meaning 'Law' Strong's 3551

Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
5:18 For amen I say to you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no way pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
7:12 Therefore all things whatever you would that men should do to you, you do even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
11:13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
12:5 Or have you not read in the law, how that on the Sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?
22:36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
22:37 Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
22:39 And the second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
23:23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these you ought to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Luke 2:22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
2:23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
2:24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
2:25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
2:26 And it was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
2:27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
2:39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.
10:26 He said to him, What is written in the law? how do you read?
16:16 The law and the prophets prophesied until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presses into it.
16:17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.
24:44 And he said to them, These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
1:45 Philip finds Nathanael, and says to him, We have found him, of whom Moses wrote in the law, and the prophets, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
7:19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you go about to kill me?
7:23 If a man on the Sabbath day receives circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are you angry at me, because I have made a man completely whole on the Sabbath day?
7:49 But this people who do not know the law are cursed.
7:51 Does our law judge any man, before it hears him, and know what he does?
8:5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what do you say?
8:17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
10:34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, You are gods?
12:34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abides for ever: and how do you say, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
15:25 But this comes to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
18:31 Then said Pilate to them, You take him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
19:7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

Acts 6:13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:
7:53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and do not have kept it.
13:15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, You men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.
13:39 And by him all who believe are justified fall things, from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
15:5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
15:24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain who went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, You must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
18:13 Saying, This fellow persuades men to worship God contrary to the law.
18:14 And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O Jews, reason would that I should bear with you:
18:15 But if it is a question of words and names, and of your law, you look to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.
21:20 And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said to him, You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are who believe; and they are all zealous of the law:
18:24 Take them, and purify yourself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things, of which they were informed concerning you, are nothing; but that you yourself also walk orderly, and keep the law.
18:28 Crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man, who teaches all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks also into the temple, and has polluted this holy place.
22:3 I am truly a man who is a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as you all are this day.
22:12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,
23:3 Then said Paul to him, God shall smite you, you whited wall: for do you sit to judge me after the law, and command me to be smitten contrary to the law?
23:29 Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but having nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.
24:6 Who also has gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.
24:14 But this I confess to you, that after the way which they call heresy, so I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:
25:8 While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.
28:23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

Romans 2:12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
2:13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
2:14 For when the Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, not having the law, are a law to themselves:
2:15 Which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
2:17 Behold, you are called a Jew, and rest in the law, and make your boast of God,
2:18 And know his will, and approve the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;
2:19 And are confident that you yourself are a guide of the blind, a light of those who are in darkness,
2:20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, who has the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
2:23 You who make your boast of the law, through breaking the law do you dishonour God?
2:25 For circumcision indeed profits, if you keep the law: but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision is made uncircumcision.
2:26 Therefore if the uncircumcision keeps the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
2:27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfills the law, judge you, who by the letter and circumcision do transgress the law?
3:19 Now we know that whatever things the law says, it says to those who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? No: but by the law of faith.
3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the works of the law.
3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yes, we establish the law.
4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
4:14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of no effect:
4:15 Because the law works wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
4:16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for you are not under the law, but under grace.
6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Romans 7:1 Do you not know, brethren, (for I speak to those who know the law,) how that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives?
7:2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he lives; but if the husband is dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
7:3 So then if, while her husband lives, she is married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband is dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she is married to another man.
7:4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that you should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. No, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, You shall not covet.
7:8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, worked in me every lust. For without the law sin was dead.
7:9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
7:10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be to death.
7:11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
7:12 Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
7:16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
7:21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
9:31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness.
9:32 Why? Because they did not seek it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone;
10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one who believes.
10:5 For Moses describes the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which does those things shall live by them.
13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.
13:9 For this, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, You shall not covet; and if there is any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
13:10 Love works no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

1 Corinthians 7:39 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband lives; but if her husband is dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
9:8 Did I say these things as a man? Or does not the law say the same also?
9:9 For it is written in the law of Moses, You shall not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treads out the corn. Does God take care for oxen?
9:20 And to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain those who are under the law;
14:21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak to this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, says the Lord.
14:34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted for them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also says the law.
15:56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.

Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
2:19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live to God.
2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness comes by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
3:2 This only would I learn of you, did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3:5 He therefore who ministers to you the Spirit, and works miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one who continues not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
3:12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that does them shall live in them.
3:13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one who hangs on a tree:
3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of no effect.
3:18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
3:19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
3:20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, amen righteousness should have been by the law.
3:22 But the scripture has concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up to the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
3:24 Therefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
4:4 But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
4:5 To redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
4:21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law?
5:3 For I testify again to every man who is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
5:4 Christ is become of no effect to you, whoever of you are justified by the law; you are fallen from grace.
5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
5:18 But if you are led of the Spirit, you are not under the law.
5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
5:13 For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.

Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of two one new man, so making peace;

Philippians 3:5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;
3:6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
3:9 And be found in him, not having my own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

1 Timothy 1:8 But we know that the law is good, if a man uses it lawfully;
1:9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

Hebrews 7:5 And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:
7:12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.
7:16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.
7:19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did ; by the which we draw near to God.
7:28 For the law makes men high priests who have weakness; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, makes the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.
8:4 For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests who offer gifts according to the law:
8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
9:19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
10:8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin you would not, neither had pleasure in them ; which are offered by the law;
10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
10:28 He who despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

James 1:25 But whoever looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues in it, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
2:8 If you fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, You shall love your neighbor as yourself, you do well:
2:9 But if you have respect to persons, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
2:10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
2:11 For he who said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if you commit no adultery, yet if you kill, you have become a transgressor of the law.
2:12 So speak, and so do, as those who shall be judged by the law of liberty.
4:11 Do not speak evil one of another, brethren. He who speaks evil of his brother, and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law, and judges the law: but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge.
