Introduction 2.2

This is a thorough word study about the meaning of the Greek word περιτομὴ, 'peritome' translated 'circumcision'. It includes every verse where the word 'peritome' (Strong's 4061) appears in the New Testament. To obtain a true understanding of this word these scriptures need to be meditated on and notes made of their meaning in different contexts. This requires putting scriptures together where they seem to have a similar meaning, and then meditating even more. The truth will be revealed by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to guide us into all truth (John 16:13). Wherever this word peritome appears in the Greek, the translation of it is highlighted with yellow. In Greek, with the exception of case endings, the suffixes and prepositions are not added to the basic word as in Hebrew, so these have not been been included in highlighted text. Every blessing be to those who seek the truth of God's word.

7:23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath day, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are you angry at me, because I have made a man completely whole on the Sabbath day?

Acts 7:8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begot Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begot Jacob; and Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs.
10:45 And the faithful of the circumcision were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles also.
11:2 And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, those who were of the circumcision contended with him,

Romans 2:25 For circumcision indeed profits, if you keep the law: but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision is made uncircumcision.
2:26 Therefore if the uncircumcision keeps the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
2:27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfills the law, judge you, who by the letter and circumcision transgress the law?
2:28 For he is not a Jew, who is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
2:29 But he is a Jew, who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
3:1 What advantage then has the Jew? Or what profit is there of circumcision?
3:30 Seeing it is one God, who shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
4:9 Is this blessedness then on the circumcision only, or on the uncircumcision also? For we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
4:10 How was it then reckoned? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had in uncircumcision: that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed to them also:
4:12 And the father of circumcision to those who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.

1 Corinthians 7:19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.

Galatians 2:7 But on the contrary, having seen that I have been entrusted with the gospel of the uncircumcision, according as Peter has of the circumcision;
2:8 (For he who worked in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, worked also in me toward the Gentiles:)
2:9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcision.
2:12 For before some came from James, he ate with the Gentiles: but when they came, he was drawing back and separating himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision.
5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision avails anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith which works by love.
5:11 And I, brothers, if I yet preach circumcision, why am I persecuted? Then the offence of the cross has been made void.
6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision avails anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.

Ephesians 2:11 Therefore remember, that you being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

Philippians 3:3 For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
3:5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; according to the law, a Pharisee;

Colossians 2:11 In whom also you are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
3:11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
4:11 And Jesus, who is called Justus, who are of the circumcision. These only are my fellow-workers to the kingdom of God, who have been a comfort to me.

Titus 1:10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision:
